How UV Printing Works on Plastic?

Plastic is a non-porous substrate. UV ink does not sink into the material; it forms a solid layer on top after UV curing. You can print white ink base, CMYK color and clear varnish in one pass. White ink improves color density on dark plastic, while varnish adds gloss and scratch resistance, even raised texture effects. Flat and slightly curved housings are supported.

Plastic Material Compatibility

✅ Easy to print: ABS, PC, ABS+PC, PVC, PMMA. Widely used for electronics, instrument enclosures. Simple surface cleaning is enough. ⚠️ Requires pre-treatment: PP, PE. Low surface energy. Corona, plasma or primer coating is required to achieve good adhesion. PET and TPU need sampling test.

Important note: Mold release agent, surface oil and plasticizer migration are the top causes of ink peeling. Always test on real samples before mass production.

UV Printing VS Traditional Processes

  • No plate cost, support 1-piece sampling and small batches
  • High resolution: gradients, fine text, QR codes, full-color images
  • Strong durability: scratch, alcohol and water resistant
  • Fast turnaround: cured immediately after printing

Standard Workflow

  1. Surface cleaning: wipe oil, dust and mold release agent
  2. Pre-treatment if needed (for PP/PE)
  3. Workpiece positioning, vacuum table / visual alignment
  4. Printing: white base → CMYK → varnish
  5. UV curing inline
  6. Quality inspection: cross-hatch adhesion test & alcohol resistance test

Application Fields

3C electronics housings, power banks, remote controls, industrial instrument enclosures, medical device casings, home appliances, power tool plastic covers.

Common Production Issues & Tips

  1. Ink peeling: clean surface thoroughly; use primer/corona for low-surface-energy plastics
  2. Dull color on dark shells: add white ink underlayer
  3. Plastic cracking: test ink compatibility on raw plastic samples
  4. Pinholes and speckles: keep parts dust-free before printing

Conclusion

UV direct printing is ideal for custom plastic housing branding with frequent design changes and small-to-medium orders. Since plastic formulations vary a lot, sample testing is critical. We offer free sampling service for plastic housing printing. Send your artwork and samples for evaluation.
